Curatorial

Cecilia Wichmann (she/her) is Curator and Department Head of Contemporary Art. Co-curator of the 50-year career retrospective Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams, co-organized with the Seattle Art Museum, she served as co-editor with Catharina Manchanda of the eponymous catalog distributed by Yale University Press. With guest curator George Ciscle, she organized Eyewinkers, Tumbleturds, and Candlebugs: The Art of Elizabeth Talford Scott and the No Stone Left Unturned: Elizabeth Talford Scott Initiative with MICA’s Exhibition Development Seminar and eight partner organizations across Baltimore City. Other recent exhibitions include Histories Collide: Jackie Milad x Fred Wilson x Nekisha Durrett, co-curated with Dave Eassa; Martha Jackson Jarvis: What the Trees Have Seen, co-curated with Jessica Bell Brown and Leila Grothe; Elle Pérez: Devotions; On Certainty: Gifts from the Collection of Suzanne F. Cohen; and Tschabalala Self: By My Self. Cecilia was also a member of the curatorial research team for Joan Mitchell. In collaboration with Director of Conservation Linda Owen, Cecilia is leading the museum’s Artist Interviews Program, centering artists’ voices in collection stewardship.

Before joining the BMA in 2017, Cecilia led the Stamp Gallery and Contemporary Art Purchasing Program at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she is currently a Ph.D. candidate. Cecilia started her museum career at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., after completing her undergraduate degree in art history at the University of Toronto.
